  • Deinococcus Radiodurans
    • First found in 1956 by A. W. Anderson
      • In a can of spoiled meat that was sterilized with radiation
    • Obligate Aerobe
    • Non-pathogenic
    • One of the toughest bacterias known
      • Can withstand 3,000 times the amount of radiation that it would take to kill a human.
      • Can withstand lots of dehydration
    • Can be found everywhere
    • Used to clean up radioactive waste
    • Could have originated on Mars
    • Gram positive
    • Earliest signs f this bacteria date back to about 2 billion years ago, making it one of the world’s oldest organisms.
