Quick facts:

Kingdom: Bacteria

Phylum: Deinococcus-Thermus

Order: Deinococcales

Genus: Deinococcus

Species: D. Radiodurans

Deinococcus "Conan the Bacterium" radiodurans, whose name literally means "strange berry that withstands radiation", is a totally crazy species of bacteria, able to survive a blast of radiation 3,000  times greater than the level sufficient to kill a human, making it the most radiation-resistant life form known.

In addition to its amazing radiation resistance, Conan can be found almost anywhere on earth, from "elephant dung" to "granite in Antarctic dry valleys" (Sarah E. DeWeerdt, in a July 5, 2002 posting on the online Genome News Network).  The bacterium is believed to be about two billion years old, making it one of the earliest life forms on the planet.
